Behavioral Respite Services provided by CARES schedules
behavioral respite to families caring for individuals with
developmental disabilities. Behavioral Respite Services are
tailored to the needs of the individual and family, support
existing behavioral programming, and help maintain placement
in the family home. Services take place in the home and are
currently available in Calaveras, Merced, San Joaquin,
Stanislaus, and Tuolumne Counties.
The goals of CARES are to:
- Support and assist individuals and family members in
identifying services that are consistent with their home
environment
- Develop respite plans that reflect the family’s home
lifestyle
- Base services on individual and family needs and initiate
services that encourage involvement of family and community
members
- Effectively intervene during behavioral crises using
strategies that ensure the health and safety of the individual,
staff, and family members
- Deliver respite services that protect and promote an
individual’s dignity and in ways that are seen as valuable life
experiences by the individual and family
- Display attitudes and actions in a way that help individuals
reach their highest potential
- Provide behavioral respite services that affords the
individual the opportunity to access less restrictive respite
options

Cheryl
Burns
Program DirectorCheryl developed a passion for
helping others early on, leading her to many fulfilling experiences
in the human service field. She attended University of the Pacific
to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a
concentration in child development in May of 2005. While earning her
degree, she became diversified within the field, leading her to
become involved with a camp respite for children and adults with
severe disabilities. Cheryl’s enthusiasm and devotion to others in
need of support has led her to accept the position of Program
Director for Another Way at Central Valley Training Center in July
of 2009. When Cheryl has free time, she enjoys time with friends and
family, cooking, and being outdoors with her husband.

Kristy
Kobus
Program Manager
Kristy first began her career with Central
Valley Training Center in March 2003. She joined the company as a
Human Resources Specialist and was promoted to Human Resources
Coordinator in 2005. In August 2008 Kristy returned to CVTC as the
Program Manager for CARES and looks forward to being a part of the
program’s growth and success. Kristy enjoys reading, baking and
being a member of the leadership team in a local youth group. |
